Topic: Cultivating an Equitable and Highly Responsive Early Learning Culture

As a result of the pandemic, young learners are entering our schools having had fewer opportunities to socialize with peers, develop agency and grow fundamental numeracy, early language and literacy skills. During this Equity Talks, join Los Angeles School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, and Sesame Workshop Vice President of Media and Education, Akimi Gibson to learn why it’s imperative for education leaders to think beyond helping kids prepare for school, by helping schools prepare for kids. Together, we will explore key opportunities to scale research-based strategies that ensure our nation’s most vulnerable young students are met with developmentally appropriate whole-child support that promotes greater academic success and life outcomes.

Alberto M. Carvalho is the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District and he previously served as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth-largest school district in the United States.In February 2014, the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) named Carvalho the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year.
Akimi Gibson
VP & Educational Publisher, Media & Education
Sesame Workshop
Akimi Gibson serves a dual role at Sesame Workshop as VP & Educational Publisher of the Media & Education Division. She leads the Formal Learning initiatives, partnerships, and business for the Workshop, which focuses on leveraging the power of research-proven media to enhance and advance teaching and learning from P-Grade 3. Gibson is also a children’s book author, a former program administrator, teacher educator, and literacy coach. As a former classroom teacher, she has worked with infants, toddlers, special needs second grade, and provided literacy tutoring for students in K-6th grade. Gibson holds various degrees in human and child development, as well as school administration. ”
