While Discovery Education’s services have been recognized by the THE Journal’s readers in previous years, this year the company pulled ahead of its peers to place in the Top Technologies Adopted in the Last 12 Months category.  Discovery Education stood alongside fellow winners Lexia and Google and earning the Silver Award on the strength of its digital textbooks or Techbooks, its supplemental Streaming Plus service, and professional learning resources.  In addition, educators voting for Discovery Education noted the powerful digital resources the company provides for STEM education, as well as the resources’ alignment to standards and ability to support differentiation.

Now in its fourth year, the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards saw more than 1,000 classroom teachers, school administrators, instructional technologists, IT professionals, library and media staff and others vote for their favorite educational technology brands and products.

“This year, the Antwerp Public Schools partnered with Discovery Education on a new STEM initiative that leverages the company’s digital resources and professional development services to help our teachers’ create modern learning environments that will prepare our students for future success,” said Antwerp Public Schools (Ohio) Superintendent Dr. Martin Miller.  “This partnership has been a game changer for our district and I believe this initiative is the best thing we have ever done for teachers and students. Discovery Education’s placement among the winners in the Top Technologies Adopted in the Last 12 Months category is well deserved.”

In addition to being recognized among the Top Technologies Adopted in the Last 12 Months, the Discovery Educator Network bested challengers Twitter and the Teaching Channel to take the first-place Platinum Award in the Favorite Education Networks/Professional Communities/Professional Development Systems category.  A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Educator Network connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.

The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”  Embedded formative assessment opportunities that help educators monitor student progress are embedded into each Techbook, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbooks work on any device.

Finally,Discovery Education Streaming Plus was recognized with a Gold Award in the Favorite Other Education Toolcategory.  Discovery Education Streaming Plusis a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas that helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information across all subject areas. Students can access a variety of digital assets such as images, primary source documents, podcasts, articles, and videos, then are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of STEM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

“Discovery Education is honored by this recognition and we thank not only THE Journals’ readers, editors, and everyone who voted in the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards, but also our school-based partners for trusting us to support their learning initiatives,” said Scott Kinney, Discovery Education’s President of K-12 Education.  “Each day, millions of educators give Discovery Education the opportunity to assist their important efforts to help each child reach their fullest potential.  We are grateful for the opportunity to serve those teachers and their students, and look forward to continuing to partner with educators around the world to support the success of all learners.”
