(July 6, 2010) – Discovery Education announces the promotion of Scott Kinney to Senior Vice President of Global Professional Development, Policy & Education Outreach. The announcement was made by Bill Goodwyn, President of Global Distribution and CEO, Discovery Education and Lori McFarling, CMO, Discovery Education. Kinney`s passion, expertise and rich background in education have proven invaluable to the growth of Discovery Education`s business, which provides services to more than half the schools in the U.S., and have further cemented Discovery`s position as the leader in delivering digital media services. In his new post, Kinney will report to Bill Goodwyn. As Senior Vice President of Global Professional Development, Policy & Education Outreach, Kinney will oversee the international expansion of Discovery Education`s Professional Development line of business. In addition, he will play a critical role in shaping worldwide policy surrounding educational technology, and in providing educators around the world with the skills to integrate the latest educational technologies into classroom instruction to improve student achievement. Just recently, in conjunction with Singapore`s Ministry of Education, he led the successful implementation of professional development opportunities for educators throughout the country. In addition Kinney will also continue to oversee the Discovery Educator Network (DEN), an international community of more than 150,000 educators dedicated to supporting student achievement through digital media and educational technology. “Scott`s enthusiasm and knowledge about the effective application of educational technologies and digital content will be vital in driving our business forward internationally,” said Goodwyn. “Discovery Education is committed to ensuring that educators around the world are equipped with the tools and resources to seamlessly integrate the latest educational technologies into instruction and ultimately improve student achievement.” While serving in his most recent position as Vice President of Global Outreach and Learning Initiatives, Kinney was a tireless advocate and strong voice in support of the creative and effective application of educational technologies and digital content in America’s schools. He served as Discovery Education`s strategic liaison for education policy, frequently addressing audiences around the world about the positive role educational technology can play in improving student achievement. Just last year, he joined President Obama`s Chief Technology Officer in testifying on Capitol Hill before the U.S. House of Representative`s Education and Labor Committee on the future of education in America. In his testimony, Kinney emphatically called on all levels of government to accelerate their support for the use of rich digital content in schools. Kinney began his career as a Technology Specialist at the Central Columbia School District in Pennsylvania, where he helped teachers integrate educational technologies into their classroom activities. Soon, he was named District Instructional Technology Coordinator for the Sharpsville Area School District in Pennsylvania, working with educators to create district-wide plans to encourage the use of educational technologies in schools. He then went on to become Director of Educational Technologies at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania, where he founded and nurtured a new department specifically designed to support local Eastern Pennsylvania school districts in the effective integration of technology into curriculum. He joined Discovery in 2005 to help launch the Discovery Educator Network. Beyond the classroom and boardroom, Kinney has keynoted numerous national education conferences, offering teachers classroom-tested strategies for leveraging educational technologies and digital content to improve student engagement at all levels. He is also a contributor to national education publications and has co-authored multiple articles about using technology as a tool to help differentiate instruction. Kinney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer & Information Science, having graduated Magna Cum Laude, and a Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.
